Love Turns Obstacles Into Opportunities

Welcome to IGM Children Homes

The IGM Children Homes (IGM) is a public charity dedicated to work among the less privileged citizens of the country without discretion of caste, creed, colour, or gender.

Over the past 3 decades, IGM has been fulfilling its mission to save children by giving them a loving home and the stability and education they need for a fulfilling future.

We invite you to learn more about us, our team, and the outreach and community service we do in India.

Our story

Every Child Matters

In 1975, Jacob and Shanthi Williams felt compelled to help the unwanted and under privileged children in their community. As a first step, they took 7 orphan boys into their rented, thatched home. Ten years later, the number of children under their care had grown to 50, so they decided to formalize and expand their mission for needy children and thus IGM was born.

Today the IGM is led by Jacob and Shanthi’s children Joe, Pearlyn, and Joe’s wife Eunice.

IGM cares for over 240 children in four homes in South India along with running various community service programs.

Our Homes

The children in the IGM homes are valued, cared for and loved. Their lives are transformed through healthy nutrition, medical care, education and a safe environment where they can learn, play and grow.

We have four homes in Tamil Nadu:

108 girls at Guduvancheri, 89 boys at Pandur, 13 girls at Salamangalem, and 31 girls at Ooty.

IGM was awarded “Best childcare Institute” out of 106 institutions in the Kancheepuram District, Tamil Nadu.

IGM is the go-to destination for local government and social service agencies looking to place a traumatized child

5,600 children have been rescued and restored over the past 35 years

Education

Break the cycle of Poverty

We believe each child in our care is unique, with distinct talents and abilities. The children in each of the four homes are enrolled in nearby public schools which wouldn’t have been offered to them before.

After graduation, the children are counseled to help identify which field is best for them and we assist them in finding a suitable college or vocational training school. Many nurses, tailors, and medical and industrial technicians have blossomed in the halls of IGM.

Without education most of these children were likely to live on the streets or work in servitude.

IGM sees education as a building block empowering young lives

Free Tuition Program

In addition to our Children Homes, we operate free tutoring centers in 15 locations in remote villages in Odisha, where literacy rates are extremely low and the children do not receive guidance at home.

Each Learning Center provides morning or evening tutoring with qualified teachers to approximately 35 children between the ages of 6-14 years.  We give each of the children a backpack filled with much needed school supplies to help them succeed.

Empowering Girls

Respect, Love and Opportunities

IGM was one of the first organizations locally to recognize the unique dangers for women and girls and established a girls’ home in 1999.

In addition to attending their secondary education, our girls are offered training in different kinds of arts. Tailoring is taught as well as jewelry making, candle making, painting, and card creations. They have the opportunity to learn business practices by selling their handcrafts and clothing in the IGM Shop as well as earning their own money and becoming more self-reliant.

2,800 girls’ lives have been impacted by IGM and continue to raise the bar higher in assuring women’s rights and equality in India.

“IGM has been a pioneer for female equality and empowerment for more than 20 years”

Community Outreach

It takes a village

We love and care for our community. We offer multiple outreach programs to help our neighbors.  We work side by side with the local government, businesses, and community leaders to help those less fortunate.

Tailoring Program for Women

IGM has six centers in neighboring states giving women the opportunity to learn tailoring.  Upon completion they receive a sewing machine and supplies to help empower these women to earn their own income. For some it is a way to escape a life of prostitution.

Disaster Relief

IGM is the first call that local authorities make during national emergencies. IGM uses their own boat and vehicles to assist with rescue during floods and cyclones; they provide food, clothing and supplies during drought or any kind of devastation.

Medical Missions

IGM partners with doctors from 3 hospitals to offer free medical assistance in Walajabad and Meiyur. The IGM ambulance and medical van are used regularly to care for the elderly in remote villages.

Covid 19 Assistance

In 2021, the local government partnered with IGM to distribute daily food and groceries to 1,250 families living on the streets and in the slums of Chennai.

Care for the Elderly, Widows, and Lepers

Over 30 widows and elderly women are provided food, clothing, and housing.

Feeding Program

IGM supports villages and families affected by seasonal droughts – 100,000 people a year are fed through this program.
